Bondi Junction

Location: Eastern Suburbs
Bondi Junction is Sydney's fifth largest business district behind the CBD itself, North Sydney, Parramatta and Chatswood. The arrival of the Eastern Suburbs railway in the late 1970s was the catalyst for Bondi Junction to be developed as the largest retail centre in the eastern suburbs.

Being in the middle of one of Sydney's most affluent residential areas, retail activity was focused on the top end of the market, and as a result Bondi Junction has become a mecca for high quality fashion, furnishing and homewares. The multi-storey Westfield shopping centre is at the heart of the shopping area - filled with every type of store imaginable. But equally important to locals and visitors alike is Oxford Street Mall, which is known for its boutiques, homewares stores and grocers along with restaurants and cafes and a number of iconic old-fashioned pubs.

Bondi Juntion is the transport hub for the Eastern Suburbs, being not only the terminus for the Eastern Suburbs railway line, but also the location of an interchange for a network of bus services throughout the area.

Bondi Beach is a neighbouring suburb to the east with a world-famous beach. Bondi and North Bondi are also neighbouring suburbs.

There have been many major commercial and residential developments around the main street and surrounding area in recent times, notably a bus/rail interchange and large shopping mall. Many of the original pubs have been maintained, notably, the Nelson Hotel, so named because of its location on Nelson Street, still exudes Bondi Junction's working class roots. Slick new apartment complexes house most of the residents; although a few Victorian and Federation style terraces are still to be found on smaller streets closer to Centennial Park.

Transport: Bondi Junction railway station is an underground station that is also the eastern terminus of the Eastern Suburbs railway on the Sydney Trains network. The station is also the terminus of limited South Coast Line services. A bus interchange is located at ground level, above the railway station and below residential towers.
